Electronic Arts brings the game night classic Trivial Pursuit to the iPod touch and iPhone. EA's precise attention to detail brings this digital rendition of the board game legend to life. Long time admirer's of the game will appreciate the new game modes built into Trivial Pursuit as a breath of fresh air. With innovations like WiFi, Pass N` Play multiplayer modes, and Pursuit and Classic single player mode, gamers old and new will find something enjoyable in this incarnation of a classic.
A brand new play style called Pursuit mode makes its debut as you challenge yourself to complete a maze like game board in the least number of questions. The replay value is raised significantly as you try and beat your earlier score. There are also tiles with a twist. Some tiles will spawn a question from a random category or have the ability to propel you forward twice as many spaces. In this mode, the quicker you answer a question the more spaces you move. A sharp mind and quick fingertip will pay dividends.
The Pass N' Play mode allows you to challenge a friend using one physical device. It was nice to see this option when so many games that have the potential to include such a mode do not. You may select either Pursuit or Classic game play styles and a player continues to answer until a question is missed.
WiFi mode presumably works much like Pass N` Play except over a local network and on up to four devices.
Resting atop some of the solid mechanics of the game are the engaging graphics and sound effects. The board, game pieces, and pies are all vibrantly displayed in shimmering color. Another thing I really enjoyed was all of the statistical data available regarding your pursuit of the trivial. It's easy to keep track of how many questions from each category you have seen, as well as your accuracy in a given category. In Statistics under Miscellaneous, monitor how many tiles you have traveled, your longest streak of correct questions, total wedges collected and more.
Trivia games live or die by their questions. I am happy to report I did not receive one repeat question in the 350 questions I attempted to answer. This game was quite humbling to play, assuring me I have much to learn about the world and trivia questions. Still, this game was a blast to pick up and play. Trivial Pursuit will save the progress of any game if a call comes in or if the home button is pressed. Electronic Arts does a wonderful job with their adaptation of Trivial Pursuit for the iPhone and iPod touch and is an absolute must for trivia fanatics.
