Tweet Push is a great application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that provides push notifications for all your tweets. You can push statuses, mentions and directs. The only problem with this app is you have to pay a subscription fee for its services.
Setting up your Twitter accounts is a smooth process, but there is an extra step you won't find in other apps that push tweets. In Tweet Push, besides entering your Twitter account information, you also need to create an account with the developer, Polar Bear Farm. One reason for this is because Tweet Push isn't free. You have to keep paying through a subscription to keep getting your tweets pushed to you. You can pay for 30 days for $0.99, 120 days for $3.99 or 150 days for $3.99. When you first purchase the app you get 30 days of service. After that, you have to keep coughing up more cash.
The app includes quite a bit of customization that other apps do not have. In Tweet Push, you can choose to push all of your status updates, mentions and direct messages. You can also choose to see your last tweet text or just a general message saying you've received new tweets. There are even more options to change, but you have to access the Polar Bear Farm website to see them. This seemed odd to me that you have to access a web page to customize an app. These settings should be readily available in the app itself or at least through your device's settings app.
The settings you'll find on the website include check interval time, change alert sound and an option to set a quiet time. You can set a time frame that will keep Tweet Push from sending you any push notifications at all, so you can sleep without having the app wake you up. Tweet Push also supports multiple Twitter accounts, but you have to pay a subscription fee for each additional account.
When the app actually checks for updates and pushes a notification, a nice little sound plays and the message appears on your screen. Depending on your settings, you might see the actual text from the last tweet received or a generic message saying you have received new tweets. Apple's push notification service only allows one message at a time, so if you've received five mentions since the last check, you will only see the last tweet. The minimum time to check is two minutes. When you view your tweet, the app will open up your favorite Twitter client. The app does this very well, as you only see the Tweet Push logo briefly before it opens up your Twitter client.
Tweet Push is definitely a great application for receiving push notifications of your tweets. It has more features and customizations than other apps that do the same task. The only problem is you have to continuously pay to keep the app alive. This just won't work when there are other applications out there that do the same thing without forcing the user to pay for a subscription. As long as those other apps exist, I cannot recommend purchasing Tweet Push.
Editor’s Note: As each App Store customer has different financial constraints and app prices tend to fluctuate dramatically, AppVee rates all apps without regard to price. Therefore, it is possible for an app to score highly, yet receive a “don’t buy†recommendation.
