Type Drawing is an app for the iPhone & iPod Touch that allows you to use lines of text to draw pictures. The app is simple to use, with some very basic features. It definitely adds a creative tool to your device you've probably never had before.

The app opens up with a yellow paper background with something that appears to be a coffee cup stain in the lower right corner. You can touch the screen and start drawing right away, but let's go over the options first.

The bottom of the screen lays out five basic options to customize your drawing. The first button allows you to type in whatever text you want. I actually typed in a really long string of characters, but there doesn't seem to be a limit of how long your text can be. The second button will change your font. Here's our first limitation - there only seems to be eight different font choices. The choices presented are very basic and simple and you can't change the color. The third button allows you to change the background. You can use yellow paper, white paper, choose a picture from your photo albums, or use the camera to take a new picture. The fourth button will save your drawing to your photo library and the final button will undo your last action. The undo button seems to be the only way to clear what you've drawn. There is no eraser tool or clear all button. So, if you have fifty different strokes in your drawing, you have to hit the undo button fifty times to clear the whole screen, or you can restart the app. This is probably the biggest problem with the app.

Now on to the actual drawing! The app has made drawing using text a really fun and fluid experience on the iPhone. As you move your finger around the screen, your text will be drawn. If you swipe to the right, the text becomes upright, and to the left, the text turns upside down. The slower you move your finger, the smaller the text. Moving your finger very fast will make the text larger. Another limitation is that you can only touch one finger to the screen at a time. You will inevitably have the urge to use multiple fingers to create your drawing. This would be a nice feature to add in an update.

Some other features lacking in the app are zoom, pan and resolution. Zoom and pan are nice features, but I'm not sure they are really necessary in this application. Also, when you save your drawing and view it on the computer, it doesn't look as amazing as it should. There needs to be an option to save the drawing to low, medium or high resolution.

That's really it for this app. It's very simple, but still fun to play with. With the option to add your own photos for the background, the possibilities for creativity are endless. The app functions very well. With some added features in the next update, this app will definitely be a five star. Even as it is now, it's a solid app and I strongly recommend checking it out.
