uStream is an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to view live and recorded content from the uStream.com network. At the time of this review, this app is under consideration by Apple with no clear release date.
The app is broken down into three tabs: Live, Upcoming, and Archived. The Live tab offers Top Live, Featured, and All Live for filters. In Upcoming you can filter by Featured or All Events. And in Archived you can filter by Featured or Most Viewed. There?s a search button in the top right that you can use to search for a specific show, but remember to select the right tab before entering your search.
Once you find a stream you wish to watch, just tap on it and it will load up with the video and the chat window below it if the show is live and they have chat enabled. Each time you load up the app you?ll have to sign in if you want to join the chat. To sign in, simply tap the chat area.
Here you can easily create a new account from within the app or log in if you already have an account.
The app isn?t flawless unfortunately. Over WiFi is where you get the best experience, but you can still use it over 3G with only minimal buffering issues. Occasionally you?ll receive a connection error and get dropped from viewing the channel, but that seems to mostly happen over 3G. The biggest issue with this app is the chat functionality. There?s no autocorrect in the chat and it?s not exactly instant. There?s a delay when posting that can last up to 30 seconds and even double post your message. Overall, this app is amazing and it will be great to see it in the App Store. Unfortunately things may need to be tweaked before you get your hands on it, but this is going to be a must have app.
