We've seen a few skateboarding apps on the iPhone and iPod Touch and some have been interesting, others, not. Vans SK8 Pool Service is the best that I've personally seen to date. The game features a 3D setting where skaters will be shredding it up in a pool turned concrete paradise. Players have the choice of playing a career or just free skating. Players will select from two different pro skaters, Bucky Lasek and Omar Hassan to play with and will work to unlock different pro model skateboards.
The game utilizes tilt to steer and is by far my largest complaint with the game.
It sometimes gets a bit confusing how to steer and is hard to make your character move exactly how you want. Moves and tricks are handled by swiping in different directions as you gain air from a jump. For example, a swipe up with both fingers on the screen will cause your character to do a Christ Air. At any time a player can pause and view the move list. Grinding is handled by holding fingers on the screen when the character reaches the rim.
Featuring some pretty good graphics and a small but interesting soundtrack, Vans SK8, despite it's flaws, still holds the title as the best skateboarding game to date. We still are holding out for a full skate park but that may be asking too much from the limited devices at the moment. So for now, grab Vans SK8 and see if you can reach hall of fame status.
