Vicinity is another app that allows you to see what locations are around you based on filters that you set, and get additional information about them. A lot of Vicinity is based around outside information, such as buttons that will load up Safari to view Wikipedia or Yahoo! based pages for additional information. While this isn?t bad, we?ve seen plenty of apps that are capable of doing it within the app itself.
Taking a page from the WikiMe book, Vicinity pulls up all the information for the places around you through Wikipedia. You will have to exit the app and enter Safari to read anything on that entry, but it is pretty handy if you?re looking for some background information. This isn?t really the main part of the app, but it?s a nice additional feature, just like being able to view geotagged pictures through flickr and panoramio.
The bread and butter of Vicinity is the massive filter options to show you what?s around your location. The Services and Amenities area offers information for banks, bars/pubs, cafes, convenience stores, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, takeout, and taxi firms. Tapping on any of these options bring up a list of places ordered by proximity to you. If you select a place, it will tell you the address, phone number, link you to local.yahoo.com, and even allow you to view it in Google Maps.
The best feature of Vicinity is that it keeps track of your location. So when you find a place you want to go and select view on map, it?s actually going to use your current location as the starting point. This saves you an entire step and more waiting. Vicinity is a nifty app, but it does cost, which makes it less appealing in a field flooded by free competitors. If you like how the video presents the app, check it out. If you don?t, there are tons of other options out there for you.
