The new iPhone 3GS has voice dial and voice control over some of the more necessary features the iPhone has to offer. But for those who are unable to get the new iPhone, voice control is not something that we can achieve. Unless, of course, we can find an app that will do very similar things on the iPhone 3.0 software for the iPhone 3G and even the iPod.
Vocalia is trying to fit that description by providing a true voice control experience without the need for a new phone. Starting it up, the interface is very smooth and some of the more movie inclined will recognize it's glowing orb as the eye of the artificial intelligence HAL from the Space Odyssey. Tapping the search icon will bring up a streaming list of commands that can be used just like the 3GS. There are 3 categories that can be searched in Vocalia: Contacts, iPod, and Bookmarks. Just selecting the category and speaking whatever you are looking for will bring you results in seconds.
But that's where the problems begin to rise. Whenever I was searching for contacts, the app had no problem finding me the one I was looking for. But searching for songs occasionally yielded me songs from a different artist. It had a hard time figuring out what I was saying. It's not perfect and definitely is no Apple product. The biggest complaint is really something that can't be fixed anyways.
If you want to do voice search, you still have to unlock, open the app, and then search, and then tap the selection. It it seemingly way too long a process for something that should make your life easier. Possibly useful when driving, I can't recommend grabbing it unless you desperately want a cool looking voice app.
