If you’re like me, after you get up in the morning, you start to think about what the top news stories of the day are. So, you either listen to the television while you get ready for work, or you take some time out to read the latest headlines on your iPhone. But, what if your alarm clock could also give you the most popular stories of the day? Imagine simply laying in bed after your alarm goes off and listening to someone talk about the news. That’s what wakeupcall.tv offers. It’s an alarm clock and newsreader in one fun application.
The most important thing to note right off the bat is that, unless you have a jailbroken device, this application must be kept open throughout the entire night in order for the alarm clock to function. The alarm won’t go off if the app is closed. The alarm clock itself is very barebones. All you can do is set the wake up time. There are no options for repeating or multiple alarms. When the alarm does go off, a two-minute video will start to play with the host, Andrea Jackson, reading off the day’s top news headlines. She has a nice tone of voice throughout the show and I was able to understand everything she said. She talks for a little while about each headline and offers some humor where appropriate. She also gives the national weather forecast, highlighting the major weather events over a large region.
This is absolutely a great idea for an alarm application. I would definitely use this app, but would never keep it as my primary alarm clock. I don’t trust the iPhone enough to keep the app running through the whole night. If something happens and the app crashes, there goes my wake up call. Also, this app really only works if you’re single, or if your significant other wakes up at the exact same time as you. My wife wouldn’t be too happy if she was woken up by a loud morning show when she still had an hour until she needed to get up. It just doesn’t seem like it would work for someone who shares a bed.
The app itself looks great, with fun colors and a style that resembles the 1960s. The show is fun, and the app functions well. However, I did notice a small bug where the snooze options flashed multiple times when the video ended.
Overall, wakeupcall.tv is a great purchase for the single guy or girl who likes to wake up and become informed at the same time. If that’s you, then go for it. It’s a solid app that’s worth the price.
