World of Tunes is a rhythm game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Similar to Tap Tap Revenge, your goal in this game is to tap each note in to beat the song.
After opening the app and tapping the title screen, you will be taken to the main menu. Tapping the "Play" option will reveal four different game modes: Story mode, Free Play, DJ Mode, and Crazy mode. The story mode of this game follows an interesting plot where the "Tuney's" have been overrun by monsters.
In order to play a song, you must tap each "Tuney" as it reaches its destination, as designated by the rotating pink circle. Tapping the Tuney ahead of time, or waiting too long, will cause your combo streak to fail. Some Tuneys differ on the way they must be interacted with, such as some must be dragged or others need to be tapped three times in order to be completed. The heath meter at the top increases with each successful note, but decreases dramatically with each failed note. At the end of each song, you can view how many notes you hit and a grade based on that information.
In Free Play mode, you can play any of the songs that you have previously unlocked. DJ mode is the same as free play mode being that you can play previously unlocked songs, but with a different interface more suitable to beginners.
If you would like to just listen to the songs, instead of having to play them, this can be achieved by tapping "Jukebox" on the main menu.
Presented in a manga (Japanese style of comics) format, the art direction in this app is cute and really appealing to the eye. Each cut scene is created in a playful dramatic way and really works well with its artistic origins. The music has been created specifically for this application and can get somewhat annoying with the high pitched consistent squeaking. Each level has a different theme, as well as different music to correspond to that theme. From jungle beats to thumpin' techno, most of the songs are catchy and fun to play on. A major issue that I had with this application is that periodically it would crash and I would have to reopen the app to continue. Another small quibble that I have concerning the actual game portion of this application is the difficulty that the bloated Tuney's bring: Most of the time I failed after the first tap because I could not determine where the second tap will be. For some addicting gameplay, combined with catchy music and great artwork, currently $1.99 will buy you this game. You can also try the lite version available in the App Store.
