SUMMARY: A polished MMO based on war

Since Mafia Wars came out, many other massively multiplayer online games have emerged into the app store with the same concept in mind. This genre has become extremely popular with each new game that is created and World War is no exception. The game takes place in the year 2012 and countries are at war. The goal is simply to become a superpower and dominate the globe. If you are new to the genre, then the interface will undoubtedly seem confusing and overwhelming. This is the case with all games of this type. There is just so much data on the screen that it takes some time to get used to where certain things are located. On the other hand, if you’ve played Mafia Wars before, then you’ll feel right at home with this game.

The unique part about these types of games is that the action never stops. When you close out the application, people can still attack you, and time still ticks by. When you come back to your game you may find that you’ve been attacked several times and have lost some money or units. This is what makes the game so addicting. You will always want to be on top of your army to make sure you keep leveling up and remain protected from enemy attacks.

The home screen is the command hub for your game. From here you can access your missions, battles, units and buildings. You can also earn honor points to use with the president to receive special upgrades. The top of the screen displays all the important information necessary to your success. Here, you can see your cash, experience, level, health, energy and ammo. You need money to do almost everything. You can earn money by completing missions such as hunting down enemies, training forces or destroying enemy bases. Each mission requires a certain amount of energy to complete and your energy only replenishes in small increments after a few minutes go by. So, you can’t just keep on completing missions and attacking enemies. You will always have to take time to rest and restore your energy. If it is depleted, it may take quite some time before you can do anything again, unless you have some honor points to spend. Missions also require units to be deployed, which costs money. If a mission is successful you will earn cash, experience points and possibly loot, such as a squad of soldiers or a vehicle. The more missions you complete, the more cash and experience you’ll gain. The more experience you gain, the higher you level up and gain more units and abilities.

Battles are another way to earn cash and experience points. You can attack anyone at a similar level as your own. You can leave a comment after you attack and you can attack them again to further weaken them. You will always take some damage in a battle, so you’ll need to make sure you maintain enough health to fend off an enemy attack. You can also issue sanctions on countries that will tell others to attack them to receive a bounty. Usually, those on the sanctions list have a very high level score.

Of course, you can also purchase more units such as marines, tanks, cruisers and fighter jets. Each unit cost money to purchase and may also cost money to maintain. Each unit has its own attack and defense level. The more units you have deployed, the better chance you have of winning battles. Some units need to be unlocked at certain levels.

One of the more common features among this type of game is recruitment. If you know the alliance code of a friend, you can enter it in and invite them to become an ally. Basically, the more people in your alliance, the more powerful you become.

World War is absolutely one of the best massively multiplayer online games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The graphics are beautiful and the sounds are rich and really do pull you into the battle. The UI is intuitive and smooth, however screens are a bit delayed when the corresponding buttons are tapped on. This is not a huge problem, but does get annoying when trying to move between screens quickly. Also, some in-game music and ambient sounds might be a nice addition. The game is just too quiet. Overall, World War is a polished game that will have you glued to your device for days. Being free, there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t give it a shot. Check it out.
