WreckMate is an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to easily record all the necessary information after you've been involved in an automobile accident. Getting into an accident can be a stressful situation and this app can be really handy. You don't have to scramble to find a pen and paper in your car; you can just pull out your device and have all the critical information at your fingertips.

From the app's main page you can record a new accident, view all your accidents, view the accident map and edit your profile. Your profile contains all the information about you and your insurance policy. This comes in handy when you need to give your info to the other driver. Instead of verbally reciting your license number you can just hand them your device to read the info themselves.

When you start a new accident report the date is automatically entered and you are given three main sections to fill in: driver, vehicle and insurance. Each section contains the important information necessary to file an insurance claim. The way the user enters information in each section is well thought out and easy. For example, a birthdate utilizes the standard scrolling date feature and a zip code will bring up the number pad. This allows for quick entering of information.

The bottom of the main screen contains some other sections of the app. The summary page contains all the basic information about the driver and insurance. The details page allows the user to enter in a police report number and witnesses to the accident. The photos button is a great feature that allows you to photograph the damaged areas of each vehicle. The location page will find your current location and enter it on a map so you know exactly where the accident occurred. The final page is an area to type up any additional notes you'd like to remember about the accident.

Overall, the app is mostly solid. There is only one major feature I see missing, the ability to email reports to yourself, the other driver or insurance company. The developer has announced this feature in the next update. Also, it would be nice to include additional features such as the ability to find local repair facilities and towing services. When using the app, it did crash on me a couple of times while switching between menus quickly. I'm sure this will be remedied in the next update as well.

WreckMate is hopefully not an application you would use frequently, or really at all. No one wants to get into an automobile accident. But, if it does happen to you, you'll definitely want this app on your device. WreckMate is now a permanent addition to my iPhone and I strongly suggest you keep it on your device as well, just in case.
