WunderRadio is a great streaming audio application for the iPhone, Windows Mobile devices, and soon to come, Android. Created by the guys over at Weather Underground, you can listen to thousands upon thousands of radio stations all across the world based off of many different criteria, as well as being able to listen to local weather radio. The interface is extremely simple and finding a radio station quickly cannot get any easier.
When you first open the application, you'll be presented with a number of different options to find a certain station. You can search by many different criteria: sports, local stations (determined by your GPS), talk shows, regular music, world music, and location. You can also listen in to police and emergency service bands, air traffic controller radio, locomotive traffic, and a bunch of other things.
If you'd like to listen to a weather broadcast brought to you by the National Weather Service, tap on “NWS Weather Radio." All weather broadcasts are sorted by state and city. You can quickly jump to a certain state by tapping on it on the right side of the screen. If you find one that you will listen to often, you can tap on the “+” in the upper-right and the station will be added to your favorites. You can not only do this with weather stations, but with every other sort of stream as well.
If you have an iPhone 3G, you can use its built-in GPS module to show any stations that are available locally in your area. It will show both AM and FM stations. To the right of every station that is listed, it will show you whether or not the station can be played with a EDGE or 3G internet connection. If you're on a WiFi connection, you can play any station without any problems. If you're on 3G, you're in the same boat. If you're on EDGE, you should definitely stick with EDGE stations. Some 3G stations you can play, but it will eventually stall out and will attempt to buffer some of the station into the device's memory.
In addition to local radio stations, you can also listen to radio stations that are being played around the country and around the world. Tap the “Stations” tab in the tab bar and tap on “Browse by Location”. You can then choose a continent, the country, the city, then the station. You could be in the United States, listening to a live Korean broadcast.
There's even more sorts of stations and broadcasts that you can listen to. You can listen to live sport broadcasts and even talk shows. If you're into NASCAR racing, you can listen in to the various races on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, by going to “Browse Sports” >NASCAR. If you're not a NASCAR fan, you can listen to many other sports as well. Basketball, golf, baseball, football, you name it. If you'd rather listen to sports talk radio, you can listen to live sports talk stations, including many ESPN stations. Along with all those, there's talk shows. You can listen to live business, money, religious, entertainment, general news, and so on. The amount of radio stations that you'll listen to are endless!
While listening to a station, you can see the stations logo as well as a little audio visualizer. If you're listening to a popular station, chances are that you will be able to see the song and artist of what's playing. Tapping on the station's logo will take you to the station's home page using WunderRadio's built-in web browser.
This app can also play regular streams that aren't listed in any of the directories. Enter in a URL into the “URL or Search…” field up top. It can be an ASX stream, MMS stream, or any other type of audio stream. Also, it can play the audio portion of video streams. If you have a direct MMS stream of a live TV broadcast, you can enter in the URL and begin listening to live audio from it.
WunderRadio is THE streaming radio audio application for the iPhone & iPod Touch. Listen to over 35,000 radio stations from across the world and so much more. It's easy to use, and is totally worth every penny. This is one app that I use, literally, everyday.
