Yahoo! hasn't been in the spotlight lately with its search offerings aside from partnership talks with Microsoft. Even though the search engine may not be the largest, it is still producing new services and, even now, new iPhone apps. Following the trend of voice search applications set first by Google and later emulated by Microsoft using their Bing search, Yahoo has created their own version of what mobile search should be.
The company has taken a unique approach to the way they offer mobile results. When queried for a location such as Pizza Hut, the app will present the user with a mapping of the nearest location and links to the phone number and directions. This was a great feature. But after many tests, this was one of the only areas the app shined in. It brought web results, but too often they weren't what I was searching for or were too muddled to really see if the link was the answer to my search. The voice recognition seemed to struggle more than Bing and Google's versions and often missed my words whenever music was playing.
After testing the app for a while, I arrived on the conclusion that this app is great for location searches but lacks in almost everything else. It uses the iPhone's native maps app to route directions which was preferable over Bing's in-app routing. The app is free in the app store so check it out and let us know your thoughts.
